Income/Poverty: (in 2000)
After researching the information on income and poverty (on the US Census website and RI Kids Count website) that compares and contrasts the 02906 zip code of Providence and the state of Rhode Island, I can see that the majority of people in Providence have less money than that of Rhode Island. Within the 02906 zip code of Providence, Rhode Island, the percentage of families that are below the poverty level is 7.1% (367) and the percentage of individuals below the poverty level is 18.2%. (4,620) In comparison to the US, the percent of families in poverty is less, but the percent of individuals is more. From this information, I would say that this area of Providence is worse off than on average in the United States. Even though there are less families living in poverty, there are more individual people living in poverty. In Rhode Island as a whole, the median household income (1999) is higher than the median in the United States ($55,327 vs $50,007 respectively). In this providence area, however, the median household income is about $7,000 lower than the United States median and about $12,000 lower that the state of Rhode Island's median. Since this figure is a median of income, we can see that the majority household income in the 02906 zip code area is making much less money than that of the state of Rhode Island or the entire country. The median family income, on the other hand, is much higher in 02906 than in Rhode Island and the United States. The median family income of the 02906 region is $80,983 while the median in Rhode Island is $71,081 and the median in the United States is $60,374. This information is interesting because most of the data presented points toward the 02906 zip code to have, on average, less money than the rest of the state, which now seems to be a misleading assumption. To support this new information, the per capita income of 02906 is $30,070 while it is $28,551 in Rhode Island and $26,178 in the United States. This does show that the 02906 Providence area has a lot of money even though there is a very high poverty percent. I predict that if there was an average household income, it would be much higher than the median household income.
Health:
(The health information given is for the whole city of Providence and not just the 02906 zip code.)
In Providence, in 2009, there were 30,694 children under the age of 19 receiving medical assistance. This number is compared to the 89,746 children under 19 receiving medical assistance in all of Rhode Island. In 2000, there was a population of 45,277 children in the city of Providence. Also, there was a population of 247,822 children in all of Rhode Island. This means that, using the 2009 data we have with the 2000 populations, about 68% of the children in Providence and about 36% in Rhode Island were receiving medical assistance. This percentage difference is very significant. Another difference between the health of Rhode Island and Providence is the infant mortality rate. For every 1,000 births, the mortality rate is 9.3 in Providence and 6.2 in Rhode Island. The conclusion that we can draw from this information is that Providence has significantly more health related issues compared to the entire state of Rhode Island. This is also not very accurate information since the data is almost ten years apart. I believe that if we had much more recent populations, we would find that there is a larger population in both Providence and Rhode Island and therefore a slightly smaller percent of children recieving medical assistance.
You're on the right track, Kayla. Write a paragraph for each heading that we described on class. Start with a summarizing topic sentence followed by a sentence for each supporting statistic that includes a comparison between your zip and either the state or the US. End with either a conclusion statement and / or a transition statement that lets reader know what is coming up. - fogleman Oct 11, 2010
